Phragmites australis or common reed is a stout grass that measures 2-4 m in height. It is usually seen growing in large colonies. The upright stems stems support slender, pointed grey-green leaves. The light brown to purple inflorescence ( fluffy flowers) appear between July and September, turning brown, in autumn and persist throughout the winter. For the wildlife enthusiast, wetland, large pool or lake owner these 'stands' of reeds form important habitats for rare birds and threatened species such as Bittern, Marsh Harrier and Bearded Tit.
